PREVENTION TIPS

Small actions can prevent major losses.

Use strong passwords

Combine letters, numbers and symbols. Use a different password for each service and enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

Be skeptical of messages

Be careful with SMS, emails and messaging-app messages asking for clicks, personal data or transfers — even when they appear to come from someone you know.

Verify before paying

Before transfers or instant payments, confirm details from an official source. Legitimate banks never ask for passwords or tokens by phone.

Buy on trusted sites

Verify reputation, presence of HTTPS lock, valid business registration and a real physical address.

Keep everything updated

Update operating system, browser and antivirus. Updates fix vulnerabilities exploited by criminals.

Configure privacy

Review privacy settings on social networks. Don't expose routine, travel, valuables or documents.

Block account openings in your name

For Brazilian residents: block account openings in your name with the Central Bank of Brazil's protection service. Visit Banco Central.

Mobile device security

Brazilian residents can use the government's "Celular Seguro" app to register trusted contacts and trigger automated blocking in case of loss or theft. Learn more here.

Find your device's IMEI

To find your device's IMEI, dial *#06# on the phone app. After pressing "call", the IMEI will be displayed. Save it in a safe place.

I WAS A VICTIM, NOW WHAT?

Follow these steps if you were a victim of cybercrime.

Step 1

Do not respond to the criminal. Cease all contact and do not negotiate. Save evidence (screenshots, audio, emails) without editing.

Step 2

Contact your bank immediately. In financial fraud, speed is what makes the difference. Block your cards and accounts immediately. If applicable, ask your bank about reversal mechanisms (in Brazil, the Pix MED).

Step 3

Block your phone with the carrier. The carrier can disable your device. Have your IMEI ready (dial *#06#).

Step 4

Activate Lost Mode (Apple and Android). In case of loss or theft, immediately activate device protection. On Apple devices, use Find My. On Android, use Find My Device.

Step 5

File a Police Report at the nearest police station or via the online police portal. The report is essential for investigation and any subsequent civil actions. (Brazilian residents only).

Step 6

Submit a report to INCC through the form above. Your report supports intelligence production.

Step 7

Regain control. Change passwords, enable MFA, install antivirus, monitor bank movements and check your status with credit bureaus. In case of WhatsApp or Instagram account theft, you can email Meta Support: support@instagram.com and support@whatsapp.com.

Step 8

Seek psychological support if needed. Cybercrimes can have emotional impact. Reach out to your support network. In Brazil, women: 180. Children: Dial 100.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the report really anonymous?
Yes. By selecting the anonymity option, your data is not linked to the report. However, anonymous reports generally have lower investigative capacity, and you will not receive feedback on the case.
Does INCC investigate my report directly?
INCC analyses reports, aggregates information for intelligence production and, depending on severity, refers cases to the Federal Police, Civil Police or Public Prosecutor's Office. The investigative role belongs to the State.
Will I recover the lost money?
Recovery depends on how quickly you contact the bank, the success of the investigation and the evidence available. You can recover lost amounts, but you must follow the bank's process. In case of doubt, seek a specialized lawyer.
Do I need to file a Police Report even when reporting to INCC?
Yes. The Police Report is important both for victims and for society. Only with formal records can the State produce reliable statistics, improve public policy and plan policing. The Police Report is also the official document that initiates the investigative procedure and is required for civil actions (recovery, damages).
Can I report on behalf of someone else?
Yes, especially when seniors, minors or vulnerable people are involved. Identify yourself as the reporter and indicate the victim in the description.
